Hendre is also available as an Education Re-engagement Tutor, working in one-on-one sessions with at-risk male students within the school context. Hendre has worked with boys in education for over 25 years and recognizes that a positive school/student relationship is essential for successful educational outcomes. In fact with early intervention, successful, positive re-engagement can be achieved. Hendre is acutely aware that these relationships can be difficult and that most at-risk students have some form of early traumatic experience that contributes to their disconnected behaviours.
Hendre’s one-on-one work with these students is aimed at building a positive working relationship, firstly with himself as Tutor and then extending from there back into the wider school community. Hendre has found this approach to be very effective, as in these sessions he can gain insights into the student’s issues, reactivities, social awareness, ways of thinking, literacy level, subject enthusiasms, learning capabilities and possible ways of managing classroom behaviour.
In his work as Tutor, Hendre collaborates with Welfare Coordinators, Year Level Coordinators, teaching staff and other students. His objective is always to try and achieve the best result for the whole school community. He does this by helping to develop a productive and sustainable student management plan that is relationship focused, and at the same time helps the student to understand their need to take responsibility for their own actions.
